LMG

Lunds Montessorigrundskola, LMG, is a private school run by a parents’ association. The school is funded by the community and therefore not subject to any student fee. It was founded in 1990 and the body of students ranges from 6 to 16 years of age.

LMG is run according to the Montessori method, the foundation of which is the students’ own planning, choosing and completion of tasks with which the students may work for as long as they feel necessary. However, there are limits to the students’ freedom. It is based on responsibility, consideration and respect for the environment and the work of others. Furthermore, all students are expected to cover all areas of study in the curriculum for each semester. The students are encouraged to work for their own sakes, not because they are told to do so. This is a quintessential concept in the Montessori method.

In general, the work carried out at LMG follows a specific Montessori curriculum, which in itself is consistent with the aims of the Swedish comprehensive school curriculum, the LPO 94.

LMG operates according to a set of values that can be summed up as follows:

- Believe in the child trust that he wants to and will develop
- Respect the child
- Regard the child as an individual and take his words and wishes seriously
- Give the child the freedom of choice – let the child freely choose his tasks within unmistakable and obvious limits
- Cater for the child’s needs – always have the individual child’s need for stimulation and support in view

LMG is under the supervision of the Swedish Board of Education. On a regular basis the school is inspected and evaluated by its representatives. The school is under an obligation to offer a school education the level of which matches that of other Swedish comprehensive schools in general. In addition, LMG is bound to meet the general aims and the set of values agreed upon within the public school system.
